Notes from the Composer
From Far Away Places is a collection of eight piano solos written to depict scenes or events from afar. These small descriptive pieces, if composed in the 19th Century, would have fit the style of "character" pieces. A character piece was typically written for the piano and was titled according to musical content. Each title in this collection should be used to set the tone for the student's interpretation of the music.

The form of each of these solos is simple and clearly defined. The variety of musical textures and moods will allow your students many opportunities to explore their imaginations while focusing on a different technical aspect for each piece. Ask your students how musical aspects such as tempo, dynamics, and articulations help create the unique image for each piece.

I hope you and your students enjoy these solos and find them enduring over the years.
